What really hurts in a relationship

You know what really hurts in relationships? 

​When one person keeps asking — “Can we talk?” And the other keeps running.

​Not because they don’t care. 

​Not because they don’t feel. 

​But because no one ever taught them how to stay.

When I work with couples, I see this so often. 

One partner desperate for closeness, craving the difficult, messy, soul-baring conversations. Wanting to ask, “Where do we stand? Why do you pull away? Why can’t you just be here with me?”

And the other? Building walls. Avoiding eye contact. Changing the topic. Picking fights just to create distance. Drowning in silence and routine. Withdrawing not because they’ve stopped loving — but because they’re terrified of being loved.

And it feels like rejection. But it’s not rejection. It’s shame.

Somewhere along the way — maybe in childhood, maybe in a past relationship — they learned that showing emotion makes you weak. That if you need someone too much, you’ll lose them. That it’s safer to stay distant than to risk being fully seen and left behind.

And so, they push away the very person their heart aches for. Not because they don’t love them, but because the fear of losing that love feels unbearable.

And the one who’s chasing? They start to feel unwanted. Like they’re too much. Like they’re begging for scraps of connection.

Both are hurting. But neither knows how to say it. So, the cold wars continue. The silent treatments stretch for days. The relationship turns into a lifeless routine. And love starts to feel like a weight no one knows how to carry.
